Introduction to the Museum of Mineralogy of the UAM

The museum is in 4ª Floor of Module C-VI of the Faculty of Sciences in the UAM and in a collection of about 600 Minerals of great beauty is exposed that to a large extent come from disinterested donations of some professors of the University.

In the last years have been acquired new and spectacular units, have renewed the labels of such and the mineral species have been ordered according to the classification of Strunz.

The existing mineral list in the world is growing day to day so that every year they are discovered around 20 or 30 new minerals that after a rigorous analysis remain single in 5 or 6, because the rest is mineral variations already known .

  The forms and colors arrive at unsuspected forms, as it would be the case of the antimonite (in the photo) that can get to crystallize forming needles, that are arranged radially.

  As museum of fundamentally university character we offer a more recent range of definitions and photographies to you about the subject of the mineralogy and the best units of the Museum.

						Ref: 1020: Espectacular ejemplar de gran tamaño (40 x 30 x 20 cm) de grandes cristales de Cuarzo de hasta 10 cm, Ortosa y Egirina. En el ejemplar, el Cuarzo negro o ahumado (var. morión), está como grandes cristales prismáticos hexagonales, terminados en pirámide hexagonal con un distinto grado de ahumado, desde transparentes a totalmente negros. Las Ortosas cristalizan en macla de Karsbald y se presentan de color blanco lechoso. La Egirina o Aegirina o Acmita negra es un piroxeno y en el ejemplar tiene hábito tetragonal sin pirámides en los extremos. Su de formula química es: Na Fe3+(Si2O6)

Estamos incluyendo nuevas fotos de ejemplares que componen la colección, en este caso la ref 0446 correspondiente a un espectacular ejemplar de un macrocristal de Ortosa, cristalizado según la macla de Karsbald embutido en porfido, procedente de la Sierra Madrileña, concretamente de Zarzalejo (España ). En el Museo Virtual está colocada en la vitrina 19A.

								12/01/2010 Se le da un nuevo aspecto a la página con unos colores más actuales y mas agradables para la navegación por la web. Además se están actualizando los contadores para dar una información más interactiva y precisa. Para visitar la página como estaba antes de los cambios a princicios de 2010 se habilita una sección en la zona de retrospectiva.

More Updates

Retrospective

In this section, purely Nostalgic, we have put how it has been evolving the web page of the museum, for those who want to remember like was years ago.(NOTE: To exit of this section, please, press the back navigator button)

1999 In this year the first version is placed, simple and following the script of an already existing guide of the museum.

2001 Improvement, an english version, and a visit counter is placed and throws a result of 3.000 visits in the first year and new links are put.

2010 Format of the webpage is changed to update the contents and making navigation much easier, intuitive and interesting. This design exceeds the threshold of 1 million visits from the placement of the counter in 2001 by adding the views in all sections.
